Hearth at oil refinery in Haifa, Israel.
Firefighters in Haifa, Israel are battling to control a hearth that has broken out at an oil refinery in the north of the city of Haifa, that broke out early on the morning of Monday 26 December 2016. The reason for the fire shouldn’t be yet recognized, although it is thought to have began in a 12 000 m² container of benzine, which was about 10% full at the time when the hearth broke out (while this appears good at first sight, with less fuel in the tank to burn, a largely empty tank will, except deliberately flooded with an inert gas, comprise significant amounts of air, and subsequently oxygen, making it harder to extinguish). The blaze is predicted to continue for many of the day, with firefighters concentrating on preventing the hearth spreading to neighbouring gas tanks. The street resulting in the refinery has been closed to regular traffic and local authorities are recommending residents of the world stay in their properties to avoid any fumes coming from the fire. There are no stories of any casualties related to this occasion.
